1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable Serial # 5TE228696 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable typewriter, Serial # 5TE228696 James Grooms's 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable typewriter. 2026-02-09 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable Serial # 5TE228696 SC will soon switch to the Electric V before the launch of the 200 series.

Another survivor that had some unusual issues that might have accounted for the great condition. The scrapes, as they are, were probably recent and caused by the owner scraping the case around on it. The case had been tweaked due to a drop, so they couldn't get it back into the rear hinges.

A margin rack screw was completely undone, so the margin sets bound up. The tab mechanism was out of the pivot post and jamming up the escape rocker. So nothing worked and seemed pretty dire, but it was fairly straightforward to fix. Once fixed, the tab engagement wasn't deep enough to prevent skipping past. I imagine this was the original issue that resulted in the mechanism being pushed out of its post.

No damaged slugs or alignment issues are further clues to her long-time parked in the closet status.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
