1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable Serial # 5TE229135 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable typewriter, Serial # 5TE229135 James Grooms's 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable typewriter. 2026-02-09 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable Serial # 5TE229135 Near the end of the line. There are some SN 230 machines with a space in the entry that don't index later than this SN290. There is a 237 Electric V gallery, so 230 something is the end.

Another Wilbur E. Walker tag in the case and a Chester Typewriter tag on the machine.

This one is getting to the end of the 5TE run and has a bit of a different finish than the earlier years. Still a matte pastel, but it is smoother and looks to be thinner.

This machine was super clean inside, so it looks like it was parked after the last service. It is (was) pica 1P, but the M/m bar was a 66 elite. I don't have any good 1P slugs, so I tried 1D and 1U, but they are not at the same heights. So I swapped all of them for no. 78 presidential pica from a hard use 250 mkii. It is a sharp typeface, but as expected, the alignment is just so-so and there are a couple of mildly scored characters.

Check out the before-and-after UV treatment on the keys, knobs, and switches in the first two pictures.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
