1936 Remington Model 5 Streamline Serial # V880738 1936 Remington Model 5 Streamline typewriter, Serial # V880738 Paolo Dal Chiele's 1936 Remington Model 5 Streamline typewriter. 2023-04-11 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Paolo Dal Chiele: 1936 Remington Model 5 Streamline Serial # V880738 The typewriter belonged to my dear friend's grandfather's brother.
Made in US with German QWERZ keyboard, later modified by Remington Representative in Romania (Nicolae Ivanovici).
In the communist period some characters were marked to allow their identification, even if the overt evidence of the characteristic signs is unusual ( see The Lives of Others for the forensic analysis of typewriters at the time, and follow the link above to Robert Messenger's site for details ).
The typewriter has been used intensively, and has clear signs of wear on the bodywork and mechanics. However, it is now fully functional, and is pleasant to use provided you don't expect the typing speed of a Triumph Perfekt.
The right paper finger is missing, I had to rebuild the coil spring that presses the carriage scale onto the platen and also the draw band.
The typewriter will be a sort of time capsule: I have included, in addition to an original user's manual, also a text describing what I have done and how to use the typewriter, starting from how to free the carriage , changing the ribbon etc.. It is part of the memory of the family it belong, and so will hopefully be for the next generations....

Interested in historic motoring and vintage cars, I received a typewriter as a bonus when I bought and old off-road car. The previous owner had found somewhere a typewriter produced for the German army and when he sold me the car he gave me the typewriter too. As I learned later, it was a1961 Olympia SM7 Robust..
Of the typewriters I value more character than perfection, the signs that time has left and the stories - or fragments of stories - of those who used them ...
