Description:
For about a year, from 7/8/2001 to 7/27/02, I embarked on a project to find first-generation Remington portable typewriters on eBay with all of the earliest features. I ended up with five of them, which I will be uploading to TWDB eventually. Before I found a machine with a complete set of early features, I acquired a couple machines from later in the Remington 1 portable series; this July 1924 machine is one of those. It has Elite typeface, and looks like it will produce good work if I get it into usable condition. Right now, it won't feed paper. I had to go through heroics to get paper into the machine to produce the attached typing sample. It's missing two of its front feed rollers on the left side, and the ones on the right side all have pronounced flat spots.
My detailed records of purchase dates, except for a few, are lost on the crashed hard drive of a Toshiba Satellite laptop computer. I still own the computer, and maybe I could recover the information one day. From written records, however, it's pretty likely that I purchased this one between July and December of 2001, and that I most likely paid in the neighborhood of $30-50 for it with shipping. I ended up with eight Remington 1 portables in total, five of which have all of the earliest features. My worst-case expense was for one of those earliest-feature machines, either NM11340 (Feb 1921) or NS11810 (Jun 1921), both still in my collection. June 1921 seems to be the transitional month for some new updates (e.g., the case style). I got into a bidding war for one of these two machines and ended up with a winning bid of $110.01. Shipping was only $8.10, so my total was $118.11. I do have a record that I won this auction on 7/27/2002. This was the end of my eBay project, partly due to sticker shock, as this was more than twice as much as I had been paying, on average, for these generation 1 Rem portables. For example, I have a record for the other one of these two (NM11340 or NS11810) that I won the eBay auction on 7/22/2002 and it cost me $42.50 including shipping.

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008. I still have my collection of around 57 machines, and now I have a renewed interest in getting some of them in good working and cosmetic order.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Portable on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Portable By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
