198X Scheidegger (Olivetti) President Serial # 0587501 198X Scheidegger (Olivetti) President typewriter, Serial # 0587501 Jerry Himes's 198X Scheidegger (Olivetti) President typewriter. 2024-09-08 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Jerry Himes: 198X Scheidegger (Olivetti) President Serial # 0587501 This aesthetically charming plastic typewriter seems to be more or less the same machine as the Olivetti Lettera 92, the Underwood 319 and 378, the Hema 44k, the Sears Achiever and the Privileg 350 or 350 T. This version was made for the Willy Scheidegger Swiss Typewriting School and comes with a maroon lid and bottom plate. This example features the modern Finnish keyboard layout and the standard Pica typeface.

The build quality seems a rather low on this late machine compared to earlier Olivettis, and it's missing some of the features I've learned to take for granted in a typewriter, like a paper support or a margin scale on the paper bail. The type action is not horrible, but obviously noisier and far less refined than the earlier and more expensive machines like the Lettera 32. The carriage is very smooth though, which is always nice.

I have been looking for ways to spend less time on electronic devices, and because of this I started doing my writing and translation work with pens and pencils, and now on typewriters as well. I have noticed that adding typewriters to the process has been beneficial to the quality of the text, plus it's just more fun this way.

I have started selling and giving away some of my machines now that I have figured out which ones I want to keep. Some people have asked me for working typewriters, so I have been on the lookout for machines purely for that purpose as well. As fun and instructive as it has been, soon it is time to finish this collecting and tinkering and move back to my original intention: writing. I hope.
