Description:
New for 1968. This one rolled out with press releases and a large ad campaign.
Despite the conventional wisdom, this is not a 210/220/250 in a big metal shell. Maybe the components in this came from the 400 series standards. The main difference is the rack and pinion carriage return is now cable-driven via a solenoid with a proper carriage dash pot (de-accelerator). The frame is braced and a number of parts are HD compared to the typical 250s.
This is a 7 EL, then is a 500 a 7 ELA? The 300 is a 7 ELB and then there is a 7 ELC.
The signs that SC is in trouble. After a big R&D effort to build this, the bean counters used the old materials from the 250 for these. I suspect if I had a 1970 Sec 500 to look at, it would be like the 300 on series.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Secretarial 315 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Secretarial 315 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
