195x VariTyper Engineering Serial # 508187 16 195x VariTyper Engineering typewriter, Serial # 508187 16 Erik Bruchez's 195x VariTyper Engineering typewriter. 2024-04-26 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Erik Bruchez: 195x VariTyper Engineering Serial # 508187 16 This machine is an "Engineering" model because it doesn't have proportional spacing or justification. However, it looks otherwise like a Varityper DSJ from the 1950s/early 1960s. Missing from the Engineering models:

- margin dial
- justification dial
- justification mechanism
- proportional (differential) escapement

From this point of view, this is a more direct descendant of the Hammond compared to other Varityper models, and the closest to a proper "typewriter"!

I am considering this specimen as a parts machine due to its poor, rusty condition, but who knows, it might be possible to revive it.

The drawer did contain (fixed space) fonts, which I derusted. I managed to save at least 8 of them. A few more might be salvageable.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
