Description:
First Vari-Typer 160 on TWDB! To be fair, this appears almost identical as model 610. We do need to document differences if any.
This machine was probably made in the 1950s or early 1960s. Tentatively putting it at 1958 based on the 11-1958 motor date code.
The badge says "MODEL DSJF", which is the Differential Spacing-Justifying (DSJ) model with Forms option.
It was made by "VARI-TYPER CORPORATION NEWARK N.J. USA".
Weight: 45.6 lbs/20.7 kg.
The serial is 1377 with a separate "16" below. For model A-20, we have similar serials ending with with "20", such as "418346 20. In that case, the meaning is "20-inch carriage". Following that pattern, I include the "16" as a suffix separated with a space. And indeed, the carriage width is closer to 16 inch than 20 inch.
A Model 160 flyer mentions additional models A-20, F-16, and E-24 (none of these being "differential" or proportional), where the suffixes correlate with the carriage width.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the VariTyper 160 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the VariTyper Serial Number page and the VariTyper 160 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
