1952 Triumph Matura Serial # 804978 1952 Triumph Matura typewriter, Serial # 804978 Paolo Dal Chiele's 1952 Triumph Matura typewriter. 2021-02-15 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Paolo Dal Chiele: 1952 Triumph Matura Serial # 804978 Another flipping banger, and an example of the resilience that typewriters have. The Matura was in miserable condition. The carriage was locked, the space bar "dead" , the segment shifting mechanism not working, the right margin selector deformed and locked . Part of the problems were probably due to an impact on the right side of the carriage which deformed the tension release lever of the platen, bending it almost at ninety degrees, which considering that it is more than a millimetre thick confirms that it also created escapement problems. The bodywork had obvious signs of wear; I don't like to repaint the machines, which owe their personality precisely to the signs that the use has left, and therefore I limited myself to sanding, polishing and protective coating, putting in value the exposed metal. Detailed cleaning, full oiling and lubrication completed the job.
Now all the problems are solved, and the machine writes and works very well.
Under a lot of dirt and dust, however, there is hidden beauty waiting to be revealed. The black and white images seem to me to better to present the aesthetics of the mechanics and the soft and imposing shapes of this simple, robust and functional machine.

Interested in historic motoring and vintage cars, I received a typewriter as a bonus when I bought and old off-road car. The previous owner had found somewhere a typewriter produced for the German army and when he sold me the car he gave me the typewriter too. As I learned later, it was a1961 Olympia SM7 Robust..
Of the typewriters I value more character than perfection, the signs that time has left and the stories - or fragments of stories - of those who used them ...
