Description:
This poor old beat up machine was on FB marketplace, and I decided to go see it. I'm glad I did. It was seized, and rusty, and it's not very pretty, but it types now. I cleaned up the escapement and segment, and adjusted the 'N' key back into place, and then cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. I have always loved the typeface of the mid-century Underwoods, even though my Champion is an absolute nightmare to work on, and this little machine, a budget model of the same design, didn't disappoint. It is loud, and a little creaky, but it is a good machine nonetheless.

I have been collecting typewriters all my life, starting with a 1980's Brother Charger 11 (which I no longer have, but have replaced with an identical machine). I have well over 60 typewriters now, with a few rare portables. Some are interesting or odd, but most of mine are common machines.
My wife and I have made a deal, that I can keep buying typewriters if she can keep buying shoes. Fair enough! *shrugs*
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Leader on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Leader By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
