1951 Remington Super-Riter Serial # J2199631 1951 Remington Super-Riter typewriter, Serial # J2199631 James Grooms's 1951 Remington Super-Riter typewriter. 2024-07-19 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1951 Remington Super-Riter Serial # J2199631 The next one up in the post war typewriter showdown and another fine example. Tempo Touch vs Rhythm Touch?

These things are often so beat up, and despite being mechanical tanks, the finish just didn't hold up well. And they do not respond to normal attempts at clean up. So this nice example could not be left behind on a hunting expedition. They are not pretty typewriters, the Italian model being an exception. They weren't when they were new and I doubt you'll find many as display pieces through the years. Nevertheless, Remington sold over 2 million NA built units over a fifteen year run. Despite the numbers this puts them on page 15 for galleries. Interesting.

This one belonged to an award-winning journalist who covered the Nebraska State Capital beat for decades. I have five of his machines and all are in excellent condition, so I think he was a bit of a collector by the limited use they appear to have received. A basic service along with a few parts from a beater, then a WD-40 + toothbrush 'polish' job. Post service typing test says she's going to eliminate the Underwood in the first round.

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandfather was on a small town school board and used one for this. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! The long dormant tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved in circa 2010, Yes a believe it or not story is next, when a Hermes 3000 comes home with the girlfriend from work for free. Yes, free! From there the addiction is full steam. And yes, I now have a No. 5. Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose.
