1951 Remington Super-Riter Serial # J2199631 1951 Remington Super-Riter typewriter, Serial # J2199631 James Grooms's 1951 Remington Super-Riter typewriter. 2026-01-12 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1951 Remington Super-Riter Serial # J2199631 Remington introduced the Super Riter in 1950. By 1954/5 it is done. They lost the case to Royal on patent infringement (link) on the KMC in 48. The KMC was similar to the Royal spring-assisted trip setup. For the S-R they use a one-key-activated drag/push margin control.

Machines with visible margins are Standards. Perhaps there was some overlap where Remington dropped the key set margins and still had some Super Riter decals, which they slapped on. Standards had the silver trim strip around the ribbon cover. There are Standard machines in the Super Riter gallery that need to be removed. Maybe it is time for a note on the main page J serial number side bar?

These things are often so beat up, and despite being mechanical tanks, the finish just didn't hold up well. And they do not respond to normal attempts at clean-up. So this nice example could not be left behind on a hunting expedition. They are not pretty typewriters, the Italian model being an exception.

This one belonged to an award-winning journalist who covered the Nebraska State Capitol beat for decades. I have five of his machines, and all are in excellent condition, so I think he was a bit of a collector by the limited use they appear to have received. A basic service along with a few parts from a beater, then a WD-40 + toothbrush 'polish' job. Post service typing test says she's going to eliminate the Underwood in the first round.

*** The first S-Rs had the pivoting for service rear frame.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Super-Riter on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Super-Riter By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
