Description:
Cute little Underwood Leader. I was surprised how small this thypewriter is (although still pretty heavy). This typewriter is a 1950, Made in Canada version with a Pica sized typeface. Picked this up at Value Village thrift store for $25 in 2022. I have a suspicion that this typewriter was a mathematics typewriter. The symbols */!=+ and degree are all on the right side of the keyboard. A degree symbol is extremely rare as ia a ! on a typewriter of this vintage (because you can also use a . ' combination).

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Leader on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Leader By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
