There are some oddities with this one. First of all, it has a JC-prefix to the serial number. According to the list, the JC happens when production restarts in 9-17-1943 with JC533816. But here we have JC448225, and the numbers puts it in March, 1942.

The only Remington branding is on the back, and it has the general appearance closer to the 1945 model I have, rather than the 1940 one. Also, the front panel is painted glossy black, unlike the crinkle black on most of the machine. I can't rule out the possibility that this is some sort of Franken-typewriter built up of parts...

Also, this has a double gothic typeface. Unlike the ones I have read about, both parts of the double gothic are the same size... Also, the zero has a slash. Looking at the slugs, my best guess is that these are 98 Ra slugs, according to the resource on the bulletin board. The typing sample isn't great, as the typewriter needs some work - it tends to skip spaces, and the slugs don't quite reach the platen. I also have to re-install the card holder.

This one, along with another Model 17, was acquired from Tony Casillo, who is a pretty well-known collector. His collection is mainly 19th century machines. It was an even bigger treat to get a tour of his collection than to be given the typewriters.

I guess this turns into A98 slugs, and my best guess is a RaRo 98 slugs mentioned in a 1928 catalog, which mentions its availability in Remington typewriters.

Relatively new to collecting. Would like to document my collection.

Planning on sticking to full-sized American machines so I don't spend too much on fancy European portables.
