1938 Royal KMM Serial # KMM 14 2317425 1938 Royal KMM typewriter, Serial # KMM 14 2317425 James Grooms's 1938 Royal KMM typewriter. 2025-02-22 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1938 Royal KMM Serial # KMM 14 2317425 Under any ordinary circumstance, this early, but otherwise common, KMM most likely wouldn't have been hauled home even if it were free. Seeing as it had been dropped at least twice, smashing both sides of the carriage controls and breaking the frame, it's usefulness even for parts would be questionable. It's typing days were certainly long past?

However, it would seem a shame to discard a piece of history? A tribute, if one will, to FDR, the New Deal, the forces of a liberal Democracy that said no to fascism at home and became the arsenal of democracy that defeated a fascist coalition in a global war.

After parts from others and many unusual alignment issues to sort through, she types again!

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandparents had a No 5. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! A casual interest in typewriters started with a garage sale 3 bank simply because it said Underwood on it. Typewriters were found here and there , but I wasn't actively looking for them. The long dormant collecting tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
