1938 Royal KHT Serial # KHT14-2267076 1938 Royal KHT typewriter, Serial # KHT14-2267076 James Grooms's 1938 Royal KHT typewriter. 2024-11-10 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1938 Royal KHT Serial # KHT14-2267076 The first KHT as of 11.3.24. The "KHT" fall of 1938, ran series 2250000 to 2273522, That would be 23, 522 manufactured and was the first Royal standard to use the Magic Margin system.
There are a few things different on this vs a KMM. The KMM received a more robust line lock setup. This one is very tricky. And if you set it too far in, the key action overwhelms it and allows slow platen contact. A few little things, such as this has no eccentric screw stops to prevent the cover from opening up into the platen.

This machine was a high school graduation gift to a future teacher. Then it passed to the son and was a display typer for nearly thirty years. So a little beat up, but not too bad. It was always in the house, so no rust! Good rubber, so she types..well...like a Royal, as in one of the best.

How about 75 photos? Kidding.

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandfather was on a small town school board and used one for this. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! The long dormant tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved in circa 2010, Yes a believe it or not story is next, when a Hermes 3000 comes home with the girlfriend from work for free. Yes, free! From there the addiction is full steam. And yes, I now have a No. 5. Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose.
