1937 Remington Portable 5 Serial # V932621 1937 Remington Portable 5 typewriter, Serial # V932621 Brian Decker's 1937 Remington Portable 5 typewriter. 2026-05-17 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Brian Decker: 1937 Remington Portable 5 Serial # V932621 2026-MAY-17, Gallery Creation. All the Remington portable typewriters I own, and this is my first Portable 5! I have been interested in owning an Art Deco style "Streamline" Portable 5 since the mid-2000s. In fact, the machine posted here represents my third attempt, and first successful one, to secure one of these. I "won" a Remington 5 portable on 1/30/2007, for only $9.99 plus $12 shipping, so $21.99 total. The seller never sent it, probably figuring it wasn't worth the effort for that little money. On 3/11/2026, I won another one, a very nice example (per the photos) for $229.99 plus $24.93 shipping. The seller never responded, and never sent anything. PayPal sent me a refund. In hindsight, this was probably just as well, as that amount was a bit over the top for one of these machines, even a very nice specimen. Finally, on 4/25/26, my offer of $100 was accepted for a machine that had been listed originally at $130, and subsequently marked down to $110. Shipping was $24.93 as well, and this transaction successfully processed, so now now I'm the owner of #V932621, dating to August 1937, if I'm interpreting the TWDB serial number database correctly.

I also purchased a new set of factory-correct rubber feet on eBay, which was just as well, as the feet it came with were hard as rock and brittle. Changing the feet, and doing some light cleaning, I typed out a sample, and made this gallery. I love the looks of the machine, but it appears it will need a little alignment and fiddling with to be a great typer.

Case detail, showing it was cracked in transit. There was not much insulation between the inner box, containing the typewriter in its case, and the outer box. The eBay listing photos show that it was not cracked before shipment. I just applied some wood glue and the case is now more or less okay.

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008.

In late 2024, I started up again, working on my machines and having some of them serviced professionally by New England Typewriter (NET) LLC (Merrimack, NH), until they closed their doors in December of 2025. Since mid-2025, I have been adding to my collection again, first with a Hermes 3000 purchase from NET, then with various auctions and purchases on eBay, when I find something that catches my eye.
