1927 Remington Portable 2 Serial # NZ70101 1927 Remington Portable 2 typewriter, Serial # NZ70101 Kristian Tuerke's 1927 Remington Portable 2 typewriter. 2024-07-14 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Kristian Tuerke: 1927 Remington Portable 2 Serial # NZ70101 A 1927 Remington Portable 2. This machine was made at Toronto, Canada. The second typewriter I ever restored, it was purchased from a Ms. Rosemary Shaw of Welland, Ontario on September 19th, 2021 in Port Colburn, Ontario. The machine originally belonged to her father, Victor A. Subosits of Welland, Ontario. The typewriter was gifted to Victor by his parents as he began attending boarding school in 1927 at the age of 13. Victor attended Ridley College in St Catharines, Ontario, a university-preparatory school.

Ms. Shaw was upset that she had to part with the typewriter as it was the last thing of her father's that she owned. Ms. Shaw was in the process of selling her belongings in preparation for her move to Daytona Beach, Florida. She had recalled that the last time the machine was ever used was in 1960 for a high school paper she had typed. It still had the blue ribbon from the 1960s!

I began the restoration process that very day, removing all the panels and outer shell, and removing the typewriter from its wooden base. By the next day, I had completely cleaned the skeleton, lubricated, reassembled, and polished the black enamel. Luckily there was no damage or repairs needed. The wooden case and base received a thorough cleaning, however the wooden base is missing a hook that allows the latch to keep the case closed. Additionally, the rubber mounts that separated the typewriter from the wooden base had rotted, and so I opted to replace them in favor of rubber feet. I then sent Rosemary some pictures of the machine looking like new for her to have. She was very grateful!

Sadly, on September 9th of 2022, Rosemary Shaw passed away in Ontario, Canada, surrounded by family and friends. Rosemary worked in broadcasting for most of her life, and enjoyed performing stand-up comedy in her retirement. Thank you for trusting me as the caretaker of this machine and for sharing your history with me. Rest in peace Rosemary.

I am a history and special-education teacher from Toronto and a lover of typewriters from the teens through to the fifties! I am a firm believer that the typewriter still has a place in our modern world.

I enjoy hunting around local antique markets and buying from private sellers. If I can find an original owner machine, I tend to pick it up! My goal here is to document the machines I have in my private collection. Any supplementary information on the machines are also included, such as original owners, places, dates, and any history the seller willingly provided.

In the context of my life, they provide a hobby for me to work on, a tool to write with, and a passion to share with others. In my professional capacity, typewriters offer students of history a tangible glimpse into the past and a great way to foster curiosity-based learning and education! For my special education students, typewriters offer a sensory tool that modern electronic tools cannot match. Thank you for sparing a moment to get to know me and I hope you enjoy my gallery!
