Description:
Sometimes you just get lucky. I had just started collecting when I bought a 1918 Underwood 3-12" anticipating a full teardown, to teach myself how to do it. I discovered that the escapement gear was missing a spring that made it skip, and so I kept my eye out for another Underwood 3. My wife spotted this at a Maxsold auction, bid on it, and got it for $95, thinking that I could use one to part out the other. When I picked it up I was shocked to find it in such good condition. To be honest, all I gave it was a good cleaning, and some replacement keys (which I hand-ground), and a couple of replacement decals.
This typewriter is fantastic. It types very well, and I keep it on my desk in rotation as my daily typer for letters.

I have been collecting typewriters all my life, starting with a 1980's Brother Charger 11 (which I no longer have, but have replaced with an identical machine). I have well over 60 typewriters now, with a few rare portables. Some are interesting or odd, but most of mine are common machines.
My wife and I have made a deal, that I can keep buying typewriters if she can keep buying shoes. Fair enough! *shrugs*
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 3 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 3 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
