1926 Remington 12 Serial # LL61448 1926 Remington 12 typewriter, Serial # LL61448 James Grooms's 1926 Remington 12 typewriter. 2025-05-13 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1926 Remington 12 Serial # LL61448 This one is going to be very nice. The garage/yard sale season is underway and I am off to a great start.

Lost to history, these were released and extensively marketed as the Quiet 12.

============================================

Turned out pretty nice. The ribbon lift was rusted up. The trips were all out of whack and few of the key tenison springs were loose, so it was a bit of a hair puller. The platen is cratered and starting to crack. I thought a 12 parts machine's would work, but in true Remington fashion, they are changing parts up all the time. I did make some nice rollers for it and it feeds paper nicely and with a thick backing sheet, delivers a pretty good impression. I think it's worthy of a platen and some feet?

As enclosed typewriter go from the big boys, Remington catches up with Royal in 1922. Remington has the advantage, or disadvantage depending on how you look at it, by having the ribbon inside the machine. L.C Smith does the 8 in 1928. And the one-time innovator, not until the M in 1937!

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandparents had a No 5. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! A casual interest in typewriters started with a garage sale 3 bank simply because it said Underwood on it. Typewriters were found here and there , but I wasn't actively looking for them. The long dormant collecting tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington 12 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington 12 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
