Description:
A fellow typospherian gave me a rusty Underwood 5 with a cracked platen and melted feed rollers. I stripped and recovered the platen and feed rollers with polyolefin heat shrink and cleaned up the machine. Replaced damaged scale with scan of an Underwood #5 Pica paper scale from Ted Munk's site. It's typing very nicely now with a good imprint.

I'm a novice collector with a very small collection of mostly nonfunctional typewriters. I enjoy tinkering and repairs, so I am slowly but surely putting these typewriters back into service.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
