Description:
This L.C. Smith No. 8 was a Craigslist find from Los Altos, CA. The typewriter was very rusty and dirty but responded to a good cleaning.
When first examining my typewriter, I found a circa 1920 cigar cutter wedged between the universal bar and the line lock bail.
Ball bearings in the type bars make for a light and snappy touch – truly delightful to type on. The platen is very easy to remove – two screws. The machine has a basket shift. The “Ribbon Key” controls the ribbon color. My typewriter is missing tab stops. I fashioned two new tab connectors from thin metal so I wouldn’t have sunken tab keys.
The serial number on my L. C. Smith No. 8 is found inside the frame behind the back space key.
UPDATE: traded for another 1922 LC Smith No. 8 project machine.

I'm a novice collector with a very small collection of mostly nonfunctional typewriters. I enjoy tinkering and repairs, so I am slowly but surely putting these typewriters back into service.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the L.C. Smith 8 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the L.C. Smith Serial Number page and the L.C. Smith 8 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
