Description:
2026-JUN-12, Gallery Creation. This is a new listing on eBay as of today, 7/12/26. The seller, "heavyjuice", is located in Denver, CO, and is asking $125.00 with "Buy It Now". Initially, it was listed as a "1930s" typewriter and there was no serial number provided. I messaged the seller, letting them know it's a mid-1921 machine and providing some guidance on releasing the carriage, deploying the typebars, and finding the serial number. Within a couple hours they updated the listing and thanked me for the information.
June 1921 was a transitional month for the case style, going from the pressed foot risers and cotter pin attachment mechanism to attachment of typewriter to base with machine screws. This example, #NS13180, is the highest June 1921 serial number of which I am currently aware and, not surprisingly, it has the newer case style. However, there was some back-and-forth in the month of June, and like so many other feature changes on these Remington portables, there is no clear-cut serial number boundary from one variation to the next. Here's a list of all the June 1921 Remington portables that I'm aware of:
1. NS11518 - This was an eBay sighting by me on October 28, 2002. The eBay listing number was #728365796. It has the NEWER case and foot style.
2. NS11810 - In my collection, but not yet posted to TWDB as of 7/12/26. It has the OLDER case and foot style.
3. NS11813 - This belonged to Iain MacDonald as of 2002. It has the OLDER case and foot style.
4. NS12508 - This is the only June 1921 Remington Portable with a TWDB gallery at the moment (before I create this gallery in a few minutes!). It's owned by Gines Rojas, and has the OLDER case and foot style.
5. NS12574 - This machine is featured in Darryl Rehr's 1997 book, "Antique Typewriters & Office Collectibles", and has the NEWER case and foot style. Back in 2002, the last period of time when I was tracking these machines closely on eBay, I discovered that Rehr had put this very machine on auction: eBay listing #734474723, ending 11/17/2002. Unfortunately, I don't have a record of whether it sold or how much it sold for.
6. NS12770 - eBay listing noticed by me in June of 2003. eBay listing #21807-28141. This machine has the OLDER case and foot style.
7. NS13180 - eBay listing, subject of this gallery. Has the NEWER case and foot style.

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008.
In late 2024, I started up again, working on my machines and having some of them serviced professionally by New England Typewriter (NET) LLC (Merrimack, NH), until they closed their doors in December of 2025. Since mid-2025, I have been adding to my collection again, first with a Hermes 3000 purchase from NET, then with various auctions and purchases on eBay, when I find something that catches my eye.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Portable on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Portable By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
