1909 Continental Standard Serial # 12204 1909 Continental Standard typewriter, Serial # 12204 Paolo Dal Chiele's 1909 Continental Standard typewriter. 2026-01-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Paolo Dal Chiele: 1909 Continental Standard Serial # 12204 Early Continental Standard, apparently complete and working , even if at this stage it in impossible to assess exactly the extent of the repairs that may be necessary to bring it to full working conditions.
Aesthetically, the front decal and the writing on the support of the levers rear springs are in pretty good conditions considering the age of the typewriter, while the writing on the paper support has completely disappeared. I guess that the typewriter has been partially repainted.
Even if apparently very similar, in reality this model is substantially different from my second Continental Standard dated 1921, and I am very curious to see how this model has evolved in time. At first sight, the most obvious difference is the ribbon advancing mechanism which has also permitted the repositioning of the bell, but there are many other different details.
This is the model without tabulator; considering the gallery uploaded in the Data Base, it seems that the model with tabulator was more popular , probably because in the early years of the century typewriters, at least in Europe, were mostly used by companies and businesses for which tabulator was an important feature.
Due to the extent of the rust, the typewriter need to be completely disassembled and repainted.

Update
Complete disassembly, cleaning of the components, and beginning of assembly. Fortunately, the paint looks better than it did after cleaning and polishing. Removing the rust and cleaning and polishing the mechanics takes more time, but there's no rush...

Interested in historic motoring and vintage cars, I received a typewriter as a bonus when I bought and old off-road car. The previous owner had found somewhere a typewriter produced for the German army and when he sold me the car he gave me the typewriter too. As I learned later, it was a1961 Olympia SM7 Robust..
Of the typewriters I value more character than perfection, the signs that time has left and the stories - or fragments of stories - of those who used them ...
