Description:
I had been looking for an affordable Remington 2, and one popped up 3.5 hours away! I went for the drive.
This is currently the oldest typewriter that I own.
As of writing, this machine has the lowest serial of the 15 Remington 2 on TWDB. About 96822 Remington 2s were made, therefore this one would be in the first 10% of production. It appears to be one of the first Standard #2 (after the Perfected #2 ended). The decal says:
THE STANDARD TYPEWRITER No 2
Manufd by E. Remington & Sons Ilion N.Y.
The bad:
- missing the paper table
- missing the wooden roller
- broken off and missing left shift key
- peeled off paint and rust on the body
The good:
- pretty low serial
- all the keys and key levers except one are intact
- some decals and pinstripes are still ok
- came with its cover
This machine is a prime candidate for restoration.
Pictures after a quick superficial cleaning. (The wooden base used for pictures does not belong to this typewriter.)
- 2024-09-21: Got a roller, paper table, and shift key (although the latter is not, it turns out, exactly compatible with that exact version).

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington 2 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington 2 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
