19xx IBM Selectric IO Model 73 Serial # 735 58 35197 19xx IBM Selectric IO Model 73 typewriter, Serial # 735 58 35197 Erik Bruchez's 19xx IBM Selectric IO Model 73 typewriter. 2025-05-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Erik Bruchez: 19xx IBM Selectric IO Model 73 Serial # 735 58 35197 Another first on TWDB! This is an IBM Selectric I/O. The label mentions "Model 73". My understanding is that:

- the first digit "7" means this is based on the Selectric I
- the second digit "3" means it is an I/O typewriter

This typewriter was made in the Netherlands, but has been modified to use a 120 V motor.

I am not sure how we can date it, but the date range is between the 1960s and 1970s.

This machine includes a custom modification to connect it to a computer board.

This needs servicing and, possibly, fixing.

More pictures to follow.

NOTE: I can't use a slash in the model name for "I/O".

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the IBM Selectric IO Model 73 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the IBM Serial Number page and the IBM Selectric IO Model 73 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
