Description:
Despite almost almost everything on this typewriter being made from plastic, it isn't all that bad to type with. Still, I never use it. The Lettera 12 uses a ribbon cartridge, and it doesn't type that well to justify buying additional cartridges for it (they cost as much as the machine did).
To fully appreciate the devolution of the portable typewriter over its century-long history you really need to sit down with a full metal model from the '40s or '50s and compare it to one of these plastic wonders from the final years.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olivetti Lettera 12 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olivetti Serial Number page and the Olivetti Lettera 12 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
