1981 IBM Memory Typewriter 100 Serial # TBD 1981 IBM Memory Typewriter 100 typewriter, Serial # TBD Erik Bruchez's 1981 IBM Memory Typewriter 100 typewriter. 2022-10-31 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Erik Bruchez: 1981 IBM Memory Typewriter 100 Serial # TBD The original IBM Memory typewriter, which came out in 1974, featured, in addition to 4000 characters of memory, a 50-track tape loop. The IBM Memory Typewriter 100 came out in 1977 and featured a 100-track tape loop.

I was lucky again and got this machine through the same person who offered me an IBM Memory Typewriter from 1974. So now I am the lucky owner of the following machines in the Mag Card II family:

- 1974 IBM Memory Typewriter
- 1976 (or possibly a little later) IBM Mag Card/A
- 1981 IBM Memory Typewriter 100

This machine appears to date to late 1981 based on at least two markings inside the machine. It's interesting to me that IBM kept making these machines that late.

The machine has a few missing and broken keys. On the other hand, it has the two platen knobs/shafts, which is a plus (one was missing in my 1974 machine). In addition, the machine turns on, and touching the keyboard does something. This means that there is some life in the electronics. However, mechanically, the machine needs to be fully cleaned and lubed. There is good hope that it will work again, but let's see.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
