Description:
I assume that the Typemaster was produced during the early '70s, and that Underwood did something strange with the serial numbers after 1968 (which started at 9,967,000), because with this model the numbers are back to the one million level.
Numbers aside, there's plenty more plastic in the model that replaced that Touch-Master 5, and the case, which is still metal, is thinner too. It's still a very proficient typewriter, but its acoustics are distracting as each key strike produces a reverberating sound that is annoyingly tinny. I would also argue that the design is a step backward; if the Touch-Master was a stodgy machine, the Typemaster is just plain homely.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Typemaster on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Typemaster By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
