1976 Smith Corona Coronet Super 12 Serial # 6LEA 17742 A 1976 Smith Corona Coronet Super 12 typewriter, Serial # 6LEA 17742 A James Grooms's 1976 Smith Corona Coronet Super 12 typewriter. 2024-10-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1976 Smith Corona Coronet Super 12 Serial # 6LEA 17742 A These are underrated and underappreciated. "As seen on TV" this is "The most radical improvement in portable typewriters since electricity!" A massive ad rollout for 1973 emphasizing the carbon film cartridge. The type sample is using a carbon ribbon.

Unfortunately the SN sequencing in the gallery and info on the main page doesn’t offer any clues as to how many were sold. Anecdotally S-C sold a lot of them. For example, there are 33 sold units currently on ebay. As well the proprietary cartridge ribbons sold on Amazon shows the popularity of a system rolled out 50 years ago.

This one belonged to a 97 year old lady, who's son passed it on to me. He thought it was used for only one Summer to fill out some forms his father needed. Well it looks like it. The cleanest S-C electric I have encountered. There is no UV fade to green and just the slightest bit of correction ribbon dust. So clean, it was a mineral spirits only service. Date of purchase filled out for 1-15-77, so we will call this a 1976 model. And there is no rhyme or reason to the SN sequence, as this one has a five number vs six.

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandfather was on a small town school board and used one for this. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! The long dormant tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved in circa 2010, Yes a believe it or not story is next, when a Hermes 3000 comes home with the girlfriend from work for free. Yes, free! From there the addiction is full steam. And yes, I now have a No. 5. Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose.
