Description:
Model 421.
I consider this a parts machine as it is not in great general condition, doesn't run, doesn't have a unique typeface, and has an unwieldy wide carriage. I got this for free in 2020.
Features:
- Mid-Century typeface
- blue color body
- 19 inch carriage (very large!)
The blue body is attractive, and I considered swapping it to another machine. However, it does have scratches, so I haven't done this yet.
Interestingly, the bottom of the case is made of plastic on this instance: usually, this part is made of metal. It seems that IBM was cutting costs on these in the last years of production.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1890s to the 1980s. As of 2020, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, and a few standard electrics.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the IBM Model D Executive on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the IBM Serial Number page and the IBM Model D Executive By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
