196X Smith Corona Galaxie Serial # 6T 437081 196X Smith Corona Galaxie typewriter, Serial # 6T 437081 Andrew Nold's 196X Smith Corona Galaxie typewriter. 2024-01-31 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Andrew Nold: 196X Smith Corona Galaxie Serial # 6T 437081 This typewriter is a wonderful machine, and I quite enjoy using it. It comes in "Stardust Blue". It might be one of my favorite to write letters on in my entire collection (better than my Hermes 3000 and Olivetti Lexikon. 80, for example). The keys are crisp and type with a certain excitement, nothing feeling sluggish. All of the mechanisms in this typewriter work as expected, although a similar Smith Corona Galaxie I own is in slightly worse condition. This typewriter came in the original case with a drawer handle bolted on in space of the original- I may try and restore it at some point.

The machine feels well made. The keys feel solid, the bell sounds good. One of my favorite parts is the sliding front cover. To access the typewriter ribbon and type bars, the cover slides and tilts towards the user. This is unnecessary, but provides a level of class that elevates the experience.

If I could only keep one typewriter for writing letters, this very well could be the one.

The action of the keys feel nice, and I love how the spacebar looks integrated into the design.

Notice that the tab setting keys (right side) are rocker keys that have a very nice shape. The pressure selector and color selector tabs also have pleasing design.

The blue top cover slides out of position in the most pleasing way to expose the ribbon and type bars. Changing the ribbon is not terribly hard on this machine.

This typewriter cover actually came with a different Smith Corona Galaxie 6T, but it fits this typewriter just the same!
