Description:
It's the typewriter I want to love, but can't, because it has a heavy and wooden type action. It's size is a bit of enigma too; is it a big portable, or a miniature standard? Sure, sure, it has a travel case, but so did some of the big standards at one time. Regardless of its classification (officially it is a portable), I can think of far better travel companions than the Studio 44, some of them even from within Olivetti's own model range.
This machine's serial number falls into a chronological black hole, but there are good clues as to when it was made: It's badged as an Underwood-Olivetti, and its serial number is not much lower than an Olivetti-Underwood Studio 44 that I own, so I'm pretty confident in guessing it was built in 1961.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olivetti Studio 44 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olivetti Serial Number page and the Olivetti Studio 44 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
