Description:
I was drawn to this machine when I saw the unique case, and the look of it. I love portables, so I had very high hopes. The platen, however, was corroded and flaking, and it required a lot of work to fix - I was lucky enough that another collector in Ottawa had a similar model to part out and sent me an entire typewriter that was ruined, from which I replaced the platen. It took quite a bit of alteration to get the platen to space properly, but it was worth it.

I have been collecting typewriters all my life, starting with a 1980's Brother Charger 11 (which I no longer have, but have replaced with an identical machine). I have well over 60 typewriters now, with a few rare portables. Some are interesting or odd, but most of mine are common machines.
My wife and I have made a deal, that I can keep buying typewriters if she can keep buying shoes. Fair enough! *shrugs*
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 18 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 18 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
