Description:
The Brothers are coming at me fast! A Deluxe 905, which is same as the other early wide carriage machines that are "JP-3" in your drop down. See the links for other examples of the wide carriage machines.
The latches that hold this in the case were smashed flat, so it was bouncing around. The rear panel is bent up. The mainspring and escape have issues. The LS platen knob is bent. I found the silencer spring and some of the ribbon drive links in the case. I have a 510D for parts, so we shall see.
********
I knew, obviously, it had been shipped sometime in the past. It was part of a lot and tossed in the parts pile.
It was a nice typewriter before it was shipped. I imagine the escape silencer spring (image) was locked or dragging, and this knocked the draw cord off. Then it was parked. In no particular order:
The LS platen knob was bent. The shaft's washer was missing, and the variable screws were loose. Not a good sign.
The back panel was bent into the margin sets.
The paper table has two tension springs on these wide carriage models. They were mangled.
The LS ribbon drive link was floating in the case.
The escape spring was fubar.
The segment pivot bearing brackets had been moved or knocked over.
And the big one, the U-bar was out of its pivot on the LS. How does that happen?
A very challenging project. It polished up nicely, even with the 'character' rash and dents. I'm telling ya, it was pristine before it went bouncing down the road.
Elite no. 2 is small at nearly 13 CPI.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Brother De luxe 905 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Brother Serial Number page and the Brother De luxe 905 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
