My wife and I are both retired - I was writing code for 40 years and she was a teacher. To keep busy we started selling in vintage malls and we sell the occasional typewriter which means we are always on the lookout for a typewriter out in the "wild". I can clean a typewriter, but I sure can't fix one. They are so amazingly complicated! The good thing is that here in Portland, we have a couple of places we can talk to an expert.
We try not to collect typewriters, but we keep 2 for ourselves. Just for display. Like I mentioned, I've been typing on computer keyboards for 40 years and I cannot tolerate the length of time it takes from touching the key till it prints a char - especially our Remington 12 - I lose focus mid stroke.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Montgomery Ward Signature 513 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Montgomery Ward Serial Number page and the Montgomery Ward Signature 513 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
