Description:
A very clean example with just a couple of paint scuffs. No yellowed keys!!!!
Is the Valiant the best looking JP-1? You could get a Brother at Gambles, Coast to Coast and many other dept stores. They also sold a Valiant sewing machine during the same time period.
1964 was a big year for Brother. When they released the Valiant in 1961, there were very few ads, and they are a sub $50 machine. In 1964, they launched a big ad campaign with full-page feature ads. They raised the price to $69.95, which places them a tad over Olympia and Hermes. They knew what they had, and the proof in the quality is how well these hold up in comparison to the Euro counterparts. And of course, Smith Corona had only the plastic contraption built in the UK, so they go to court and pound the table vs building a better product.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Brother Valiant on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Brother Serial Number page and the Brother Valiant By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
