This is the only second-series with square keys Lettera 22 I own, for the moment. It’s been a great save: some friends were emptying an attic and took it to me; it wasn’t much dirty but had some rust and I found even water inside of it. The paint is inevitably damaged by it (we have to say that Olivetti paint is not so durable), and some rust jammed the escapement system, so that the carriage remained pulled all to the left (it’s quite funny that my friends took it home in those conditions, without knowing how to use margins or carriage lock). This had been my first big repairing some years ago, and it’s not been easy because every single screw required a superhuman strength to be loosened due to the rust. Everything that you disassemble in three minutes in every other typewriter took half an hour. It was the first time I disassembled and reassembled a carriage in a typewriter so not everything went fine. First of all, I used diesel fuel to clean everything; the smell took some months to go away. Then, a lot of patience was needed to put the carriage in its place. I thought it was difficult to do so; years later, doing the same on a Lettera 32, I would have changed my opinion. Anyway, five years later it still writes in its big Pica typeface, which I hate, but this is only my personal taste.

Questa è l’unica Lettera 22 seconda serie tasti quadri che possiedo. È stato un bel salvataggio: alcuni amici stavano svuotando una soffitta e me l’hanno portata; non era molto sporca ma aveva molta ruggine e dentro ci ho trovato pure dell’acqua. La vernice è inevitabilmente danneggiata dalla stessa (bisogna dire che quella delle Olivetti non è il massimo) e della ruggine aveva incollato il meccanismo dello scappamento, cosicché il carrello rimaneva tirato tutto a sinistra (era abbastanza divertente vedere i miei amici portarla a casa in quelle condizioni, senza sapere come usare il blocco carrello o i marginatori). Si è trattato del mio primo grosso lavoro di riparazione, e non è stato facile perché a causa della ruggine ogni singola vite richiedeva una forza sovrumana per essere svitata. Era anche la prima volta che smontavo e rimontavo un carrello; quindi, non andò tutto esattamente come sperato. Prima di tutto ho usato del gasolio per pulire tutta la meccanica e l’odore se ne è andato dopo qualche mese. Poi c’è stato bisogno di molta pazienza e calma Zen per rimettere al suo posto il carrello. Pensavo che fosse un’operazione difficile; quando l’ho rifatto anni dopo su una Lettera 32 capii che mi sbagliavo. Ad ogni modo, cinque anni dopo questa scrive ancora nel suo carattere grande Pica, che odio, ma è questione di gusti.
