1962 Hermes Baby Serial # 5935498 1962 Hermes Baby typewriter, Serial # 5935498 Julian Zadorozny's 1962 Hermes Baby typewriter. 2024-10-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Julian Zadorozny: 1962 Hermes Baby Serial # 5935498 This 1962 Hermes Baby was purchased for a small amount of money. I drove over two hours to London, Ontario to pick it up. The seller was a Western University professor. He was selling the sea foam green machine to get rid of it, knowing its worth. This was the longest I’ve traveled to purchase a typewriter. However, I was lucky to purchase this Swiss jewel of collectibles and am happy for its service.

You might notice the keyboard has diacritical marks favoured by the French language: acute, and circumflex. The dead key sitting within the keyboard. The professor could not give me any information except that he had the typewriter in his possession and no longer needed the machine.

I use this Hermes Baby for traveling, as the Brother Pro-Line has become too dear to me to see it lost in a hotel lobby. This Hermes for all its accolades types well enough, but my fingers get lost sliding across the keyboard. The line space lever is silly, and to move the carriage one must, “Operate it with the index finger of your right hand while pressing your thumb against platen knob.” Such work.

The machine itself is sleek and handsome. The metal case connects to the base of the typewriter for effortless transport. With a new right platen knob from Amsterdam Typewriter installed, the Hermes Baby is welcomed into my collection. Even though it won’t match up to the Smith Corona Sterling or Olympia SM3. Perhaps that’s not a fair comparison. Maybe it doesn’t matter. A Hermes Baby is one tip-top machine.

This Hermes was serviced by the fantastic Dominion Business Machines.

I purchased my first typewriter in 2000: Brother Pro-Line 707 built in 1969.
I wrote eight hours a day, seven days a week on that tiny machine. I wrote my first unpublished novel and hundreds of short stories on the Brother.
In 2020 I decided to purchase my second typewriter. At ten and counting, I still use and collect these amazing tools for writing.
