1962 Aztec (Erika) 700 Serial # 1965687 1962 Aztec (Erika) 700 typewriter, Serial # 1965687 Greg Mattesen's 1962 Aztec (Erika) 700 typewriter. 2025-11-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Greg Mattesen: 1962 Aztec (Erika) 700 Serial # 1965687 I saw this rebadged Erika advertised locally on Facebook Marketplace; it was described as "like-new" and with a very high asking price. When I went to check it out in person, it was far from "like-new": indeed, it was really dirty and derelict-looking (things always look so much nicer in pictures, don't they?). I negotiated a lower price (although still too high) and picked it up (I was attracted to the color and style). It cleaned up well and is working nicely so far. At the moment it is the only machine I own that was made "behind the Iron Curtain", so that appeals to me as well. It has part of its original owner's manual, a brush kit and a "Slifer Typewriter Co." decal on both the machine and the case.

I think the lines are pleasing, and the seafoam green body with dark green keys is quite attractive. The button/lever on the left side of the keyboard is a key-jam release.

The ribbon cover design on this typewriter is really cool. There is a lever on the bottom right of the typewriter to release the front of the cover, and each hinge has a release so the cover can be removed easily.

When I got it, the typewriter had one of those gross correction ribbons that is half black and half white correction tape. Thankfully, one of the original DIN spools was included, along with a Smith-Corona style spool that "works".

Some online sleuthing suggests that Slifer Typewriter was in Newark, New Jersey. I bought it in Connecticut, so it made it a long way from its initial US entry point.

I "accidentally" started collecting typwriters in the fall of 2020. After my daughter got one cheap at a junk shop, and hearing that she intended to use it to write some old fashioned snail-mail letters to friends, I decided to get "a" typewriter myself to do the same. The first one was a real lucky break: a pristine 1950 Smith-Corona Sterling in perfect condition. From there I got interested in other brands and in refurbishing dirty and forgotten machines. I've had 65+ typewriters at this point, passing many along to excited new owners to keep my collection hovering around 20 machines.
