1960 Underwood Scriptor Serial # E21-8594309 1960 Underwood Scriptor typewriter, Serial # E21-8594309 Claude Medearis's 1960 Underwood Scriptor typewriter. 2026-10-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Claude Medearis: 1960 Underwood Scriptor Serial # E21-8594309 This had a stamped metal serial number plate in the eBay listing from when it was used by the U. S. Air Force. Naturally, that got knocked off and lost while they were packing it for shipping.
The listing also described it as tested and fully functional. Which I guess means that they poked the buttons and the type bars worked. Not much else did. It took some serious cleaning and artful metal bending to make most things work acceptably. The electric margin control is still wonky, but the manual margin stops are accessible, so I just set them by hand.
I need a stronger desk, capable of withstanding side impacts. Th carriage return shakes the whole desk when it slams over. It probably needs the brake reworked.

The platen is easy to remove. I like that. Lift the covers, flip up the levers and lift.
That should have been standard for all typewriters since the L. C. Smith.

The carriage covers are hinged front and back in two pieces.

Opened, the carriage gives full access inside. The manual margin stop sliders are ready to hand.

Plenty of access under the hood.

Elite type. With a 21" platen, they had to use small type to make everything fit on a page.
But I like the type face.

Trying it out on the bench before moving it to the desk. At 52 pounds, I wanted to make sure I wouldn't need to move it twice.

Someone gave me a vintage typewriter and I went maybe just a little bit crazy.
A dozen typewriters later, I think I found the machines I need.
