1959 IBM Model C Serial # 11C79047 1959 IBM Model C typewriter, Serial # 11C79047 Uwe Wachtendorf's 1959 IBM Model C typewriter. 2014-06-10 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Uwe Wachtendorf: 1959 IBM Model C Serial # 11C79047 Either there's something amiss with the database's numbers for this model, or the stamping of the serial number plate on this machine. Right or wrong, here's what I did: I assumed the serial number stamp was too long to fit behind the Model name (C), so I interpreted its serial number to actually be 1179047, which fits with those listed in the database as U.S. machines made in 1959. The only problem is that this machine was made in Canada. The database lists the first year of Canadian production to be 1960, so another assumption I'm making is that the first year of Canadian production was actually 1959, but IBM had used the U.S. serial numbers during that first year.

As for the machine itself, it took some coaxing to get it running; I don't think these electrics suffer terribly from disuse, but now that it's fully functional it is a beautiful typewriter to work with.

Too bad I can't stand the pressure of using an electric typewriter. I know some find the humming of an idle electric to be soothing, but I just think of all that wear and tear being inflicted upon it while I'm struggling to put a paragraph together in my head.
