Description:
I purchased this machine on an online estate sale in Toronto. Something I will never do again.
First, you can't examine the machine for any damage, which this typewriter had plenty, and needed to be repaired: ribbon drive, shift and shift lock, new platen knobs, etc.
Second, something about dropping cash against strangers at the eleventh-hour isn't even exciting.
However, this Underwood Universal is absolutely a wonder to work on. A phenomenal typing smoothness. I enjoy writing fast and the keyboard keeps up with my fingers. A fantastic typewriter. The Underwood may not work as it had sixty-six years ago but I'm enjoying the experience. As the gentleman who serviced the machine said, "This is a real showpiece." All restoration was done by Dominion Business Machines in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

I purchased my first typewriter in 2000: Brother Pro-Line 707 built in 1969.
I wrote eight hours a day, seven days a week on that tiny machine. I wrote my first unpublished novel and hundreds of short stories on the Brother.
In 2020 I decided to purchase my second typewriter. At ten and counting, I still use and collect these amazing tools for writing.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Universal on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Universal By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
