Description:
A super clean and unabused example. The case led me to believe otherwise. I am not so sure that some attempt to stain this case was performed. The machine required a mineral spirits brush and blow. I didn't even take the platen out.
Note this SN doesn't quite match the main page info. It is an RA model with no carriage tension knob. It is teal without a T in the SN prefix.
In the lineup for twenty years. Royal, until the end, always matched the QDL to the standard lineup. With the Futura they skipped a beat. However, you can see the Empress in the front end of the Safari.
I am not a big fan. The mechanism was just ok in the 40s, and after that is downright crude in comparison to what SC is doing. The build quality is just ok and doesn't improve much along the way. The gap between Royal standards and Royal portables is huge. Nevertheless, the style and the magic margin sold a lot of machines. Royal will continue to milk the same mechanism with the Futura, Safari (Et al) and the Heritage. Whereas, SC will launch the electric portable revolution and effectively put Royal out of business.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal Quiet De Luxe on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal Quiet De Luxe By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
