Not every typewriter is as lucky as mines. Millions of Olivetti portables have been sold in Italy and most of them have been thrown away when personal computers started being sold at a decent price. Some others have been preserved in the best working conditions by the owner, for whom it had an affective value, and can be seen in perfect conditions and fully working, like my two beige L22. And others again were forgot in cellar or attics, exposed to powder and humidity. The last case is the one regarding this green Lettera 22 with big Pica typeface, which belongs to the first series with round keys, but already has one of the newish paint colors available from about 1955. This machine must have not been used in the best way even before the digital era, as we can understand from the paint, quite ruined, and from the right platen knob, which was broken when I found this machine. The lack of a case to protect her and probably a wet environment did the rest. Some years later, it was found from a junk dealer which put it on sale for ten bucks at a flea market, completely locked and full of the worst grease and dirt I’ve ever seen. I thought that in the worst case it would have been a good source of spare parts, bought it and took it home. Surprisingly, except for all of the dirt and rust the machine was not so devastated, there weren’t broken or missing parts. To eliminate all of the rust it would have been necessary to disassemble the entire machine, piece by piece, but I managed to take away the most accessible one and, thanks to an intensive wash with spearhead oil, the rest is under control. Sometimes I take it out and write some pages to ensure its conditions haven’t worsened and every time I find it in a perfect shape, it writes very nicely. Probably the owner didn’t put much love on her, and it was pensioned a lot of time ago because the ribbon still had metal spools, which I’ve of course preserved and attached to a new inked tape. As you can see, I replaced the broken knob with a spare one found on eBay. It may be less on shape and lucky than some of her contemporaries, but it writes as well as them. And confirms once and for all that the Lettera 22 is the best portable typewriter ever made.

Non tutte le macchine per scrivere sono fortunate quante le mie. Migliaia di portatili Olivetti sono state vendute in Italia negli anni e molti dei loro acquirenti le hanno buttate non appena i prezzi dei personal computer sono diventati accessibili. Altre macchine sono state conservate nelle migliori condizioni dal proprietario per il quale avevano un valore affettivo e si possono trovare in condizioni perfette e completamente funzionanti, come per le mie due Lettera 22 beige. Altre ancora sono finite dimenticate in cantine e soffitte, esposte a polvere e umidità. A quest’ultima categoria appartiene questa Lettera 22 verde con carattere grande Pica, appartenente alla prima serie con tasti tondi ma già dipinta di uno dei nuovi colori disponibili all’incirca dal 1955. Questa macchina deve essere stata usata male anche prima dell’avvento dell’era digitale, come possiamo notare dalla vernice, piuttosto rovinata, e dalla manopola destra del rullo, che all’epoca dell’acquisto era rotta. La mancanza di una custodia protettiva e probabilmente un ambiente umido hanno fatto il resto. “Qualche” anno dopo fu trovata da un rigattiere che l’ha messa in vendita per 10 euro a un mercatino, completamente bloccata e piena della peggior sporcizia e morchia mai vista. Ho pensato che nella peggiore delle ipotesi sarebbe stata una buona donatrice di pezzi di ricambio, l’ho comprata e l’ho portata a casa. Sorprendentemente, a parte lo sporco e la ruggine la macchina non era così disastrata come sembrava, niente parti mancanti o rotte. Per eliminare tutta la ruggine sarebbe stato necessario smontare tutta la macchina pezzo per pezzo, ma sono riuscito ugualmente a rimuovere quella più accessibile e, grazie a un lavaggio accurato con petrolio bianco, tutto il resto è sotto controllo. A volte la tiro fuori e ci scrivo qualche pagina per assicurarmi che le sue condizioni non siano peggiorate e ogni volta la trovo ancora in perfetta forma; scrive anche piuttosto bene. Probabilmente il proprietario non l’ha tenuta con una gran cura, ed è stata rimessata molto tempo fa dato che il suo nastro aveva ancora le bobine in ferro (che ovviamente ho tenuto per montarci una fettuccia nuova). Come potete vedere ho sostituito la manopola rotta con una di ricambio recuperata su eBay. Può non essere invecchiata bene come molte sue coetanee, ma scrive altrettanto bene. Ed è l’ennesima conferma, ancora una volta, che la Lettera 22 è la miglior portatile che sia mai stata costruita.
