Description:
This crinkle red Alpina came with broken platen knobs and a bent back panel. The two platen knobs had to be JB Welded back, and the back panel bent back in shape. These issues were probably the result of poor shipping at some point. This machine, besides being really beautiful, is surprisingly sharp and pleasant to type with!
Didn't come with a case.
The Alpina typewriters were made in Bavaria, starting in 1952.
The paper bail on those is beautiful and unusual: it is thicker than usual and covers some text. With single-line spacing, I note that:
- the last 3 lines, including the current one, are visible fully;
- the earlier 3 lines are hidden under the bail;
- the earlier lines are visible again.
The N 24 was the base model, while the SK 24 had a tabulator.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Alpina N 24 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Alpina Serial Number page and the Alpina N 24 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
