Description:
Just a weird "missing link" 4AR between the 4 series and 5 series Sterlings. Perhaps R = "rebuild"? That might explain some of the inconsistencies in terms of plastic keys, plastic, centered Smith-Corona logo, sandy crinkle-paint, etc. etc. that seems consistent with the mid-1950s 5 series, rather than the late 1940s 4 series Sterling.
Anyway, this one came from a former UPenn professor in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA in August, 2023, and was in dreadful, dirty, off-gassing condition when I got ahold of it.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Sterling on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Sterling By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
