This Quiet-Riter was sitting in a local antique mall. The case is in excellent condition, and the typewriter appeared to be in pretty good shape, except that the keys were all completely covered in some frosty-white stuff, maybe mold, maybe some kind of oxidization. The price tag was $6, so how could I pass?
When I got it home, I found that the easiest way to get the keys cleaned up was to remove them all. Then with some warm, soapy water and a toothbrush, they came perfectly clean, like new again. Then the machine needed very little as it really was in good mechanical shape. This is my first Remington portable from this era. I must admit that I'm a bit stunned at just how good a typer this thing is. It's precise, it's very consistent, and it is one of the fastest machines I've ever typed on. The thing is heavy too, and it seems to be made of good metal and overall seems to be ruggedly designed and with a high degree of machining quality. This one has a 10-pitch pica typeface.
The "Miracle Tab" tabulator mechanism is smooth and flawless. The touch control is very wide-ranging and effective. The line-space mechanism is easy and reliable, and the margin sets are equally good. The platen is pretty hard, but it's not rock-hard. The machine is pleasantly quiet, not too loud at all. And overall, it's just proving to be one of the better typers I've tried. Impressive.
And this one has a "1" key!! Rarely found on typewriters of this era.

I've spent my life as a mechanical and electronics tinkerer, bikes, cars, lawnmowers, appliances, cameras, audio gear, guitars, amplifiers, and pedal steel guitars. I was trained as a typist for 2 years back in the late 70's on IBM Selectric II's. At home I recall my mother having an Olympia SM3. More recently we got our daughter a typewriter for Christmas, and that somehow sparked my own personal interest in these fine and interesting machines. Now it's a habit that just won't quit. Daily searches on Craigslist, frequent trips to antique stores & malls, garage sales, etc. It's a fun and healthy addiction.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Quiet-Riter on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Quiet-Riter By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
