1950 Hermes Baby Serial # 5164599 1950 Hermes Baby typewriter, Serial # 5164599 Dimitris Nikou's 1950 Hermes Baby typewriter. 2020-09-10 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Dimitris Nikou: 1950 Hermes Baby Serial # 5164599 Typewriter #9 for my collection, this 1950 Hermes Baby with Greek keyboard, made by Paillard s.a. in Switzerland, bought on a flea market for just 15 Euros.

I am so happy to have this sweet ultraportable beauty, especially for such a low price. It is the lightest typewriter of my collection, just 3,8kg and it looks so cute with the cover on. Mechanically, this Baby is in very good shape and gives an equaly good feeling when I type on it. The only thing I had to do is, of course, a good cleaning and typebar scrubbing. As purchased it had its black ribbon but it is kind of dry, so for the typing sample you see here I had to borrow the ribbon from another typewriter. Comparing the spools, I realised the the ones that came with the Baby are slightly smaller that the standard spool that most typewriters use. So, I guess when I buy a new ribbon for it, I will have to put it on these spools myself.

Some details that I really like... the round shape of the keys, the crinkle finish of the frame with the red stripe that seperates the ribbon spool covers, the clever folding/unfolding carriage return lever and the margins with the little red arrows! A great, beautiful and handy old machine, in very good condition, for a great price... Yeah, Baby!

Writer and blogger from Athens, Greece. I own a small collection of typewriters, most of my machines are functional and I try to repair any with problems that keeps it from typing. For me, it is important for a typewriter not just to sit on a shelve for display, but to be able to type when I want to. On the links below you will find my blogs and social media profiles. Feel free to follow me and get in touch if you want. I am always happy to communicate :)
