1949 Hermes Baby Serial # 5129511 1949 Hermes Baby typewriter, Serial # 5129511 Icto On's 1949 Hermes Baby typewriter. 2020-09-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Icto On: 1949 Hermes Baby Serial # 5129511 This was typewriter puppy love. I fell in love with typewriters in April 2019 when I first saw a photo of a sea foam green Hermes Rocket with the spool covers open. I searched online for an Hermes "ultra portable" to call my own and decided to go for this metal crinkle paint Hermes Baby that I purchased on eBay. In a jejune manner, I fashioned my first typewriter with a green ribbon. I have never had that desire again since. When I first received this typewriter, I had an identity issue as the "Hermes" logo did not conform with the classic Featherweight, Baby, nor Rocket logos. However, through some internet sleuthing, I found other typewriters from this time also just labeled "Hermes."

I have now moved on from my first crush. Though I admire the compact elegance of this model, I am no longer a fan of the deep keystrokes needed, the big space in between keys where my fingers can get caught, and the lack of a bichrome ribbon lever. Ultimately it feels like a typewriter without ambition. I've moved on from this to a Royal Silver-Seiko Sprite, perhaps entering a stage of adolescent rebellion.
