1948 Remington Portable 5 Serial # 623716 1948 Remington Portable 5 typewriter, Serial # 623716 Ted Munk's 1948 Remington Portable 5 typewriter. 2019-02-08 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Ted Munk: 1948 Remington Portable 5 Serial # 623716 Sighted at MTE, but I forgot what model it was and didn't take a pic of the paper table, and the serial number has no prefix - thus I don't know what Model it is.

Clearly a late 40's, possibly very early 50's model. Anyone have an ID for it? It's outside the range of the "ALL New" portables and the 1949 model, so I'm at a loss.

Striking appearance, oddly colored keys, neat teardrop ribbon spool covers, and the drab, grey case opens to reveal stunning red snakeskin-style interior. The carriage release/platen tension release levers are also very neat. Unlike any I've seen before.

I am a scoundrel without a cause, and my swank outshines the sun.

I am a casual Typewriter Hunter residing in the sweltering deserts of Arizona with a wife, three cats and about 50 typewriters. My main hunting ground is thrift stores, and I rarely pay more than $10 for a machine. My collection consists mainly of portables with cases, and they stay in the cases unless I am actively using it (usually more than one at a time). I do, however keep a handful of interesting Selectrics, including a Composer and a couple of large Nakajima Electronics to use as daisywheel printers for my vintage laptop collection.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Portable 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Portable 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
